OK... somebody make my brain stop hurting...

OK... So I just drank an iced tea with "natural raspberry flavor." As I drained the bottle, my eyes lit upon the ingredients. " Contains no raspberry juice."
Now... somebody has to answer me this: What kind of natural raspberry flavor does one get without using raspberry juice?
What the heck did I just put into my body, people?!

All of the elements used in production of the product can be found on the periodic table. No ingredients from unnatural twisted dimensions were used, so the product was naturally flavored.

You misunderstand - in normal people speak,
"Naturally Flavored
RASPBERRY"
would mean "containing raspberry flavor from a natural source.
In ad-speak, it means "Contains natural flavors [we won't get into what that means] and tastes vaguely like raspberries"
It's an easy mistake to make, so they handily printed the clarification in small print in the most text-dense area of the label.

My guess is that each line of text is a separate line.
If in sentence form, it would read: Naturally flavored.
Raspberry.
My only other guess is that the raspberries and tea leaves came in on the same truck and the tea leaves (assuming tea is an actual ingredient!) absorbed some of the "essence" of raspberry.
OR something like that.
So, was it good?
You know, aspirin is natural. Just saying. (Score: 1)

As part of a crappy job in the food service industry, I learned that almost every 'naturally flavored' drink sold in America has - get this - apple juice in it.
Grape Juice? Flavored by apples.
Orange Juice? Same thing.
Unless it says "100% (Fruit Type 'x')", it's more than likely a blend including apple juice, which is tart enough (or sweet enough) to pass for a variety of things.
The main reason they use it, besides being cheap and plentiful, is to minimize the chance of a customer having an allergic reaction to an 'exotic' fruit. Like raspberries.

The book "Fast Food Nation" has a full (very fascinating) chapter on natural vs. artificial flavors and colors. Unfortunately, I don't remember the distinction right now, but it was a great read anyway.

Natural flavors are extracted from living things. Artificial flavors are synthesized from other compounds.
I minored in Biochemistry in college. I produced both natural and artificial flavorings as part of my lab course work.
I was quite happy to sample the artificial products. I knew with a high degree of confidence what went into them, what was left over, and how pure the product was.
The natural stuff was extracted with a witch's brew of toxics. It was far less pure, and I had little knowledge of what strange lingering contaminants were created along the way. It scared me just to smell it, and you couldn't pay me to put that crap in my mouth.
To sum it up: "natural flavors" scare the hell out of me.

Geez... and I thought I was being healthy by cutting soda out of my diet! Looks like I gotta keep a better eye on tea, too! Thanks for all the info, guys! My brain hurts much less. :)
