VQ Rating: Mysterio

It all starts with a pun.
Please, Mr. Karnelli, call me Mr. Beck.

...As in "Beck" from the dead. HA HA HA!

Silver Age super-baddie Quentin "Mysterio" Beck made his triumphant return to the Dark Side in Amazing Spider-Man #618 last week, revealing that he's behind the faked deaths of several members of the Maggia crime family -- employing every means from cheap movie special effects to honest-to-goodness cloning(!)

And his coup de grace... bringing back Silvermane from what seemed to be certain death.

Mysterio's rise in the VQ scale, incidentally, will be indirectly proportionate to the fall of Hammerhead -- who immediately sold his allegiance to the highest bidder.

Mysterio entered Web-head's life waaaaay back in ASM #13, as a down-on-his-luck Hollywood special-effects man who turned to the life of super-crime. This charter member of the Sinister Six has gone so far as to fake the death of the beloved Aunt May.

Click on the thumbnail for the full page. Diagnosed with the dreaded lung cancer / brain tumor combo, Beck was granted an early release and decided the use the time to kill Daredevil (he was convinced that Spider-Man was a clone -- which he had been but was not any longer... don'tcha just hate that clone stuff?). Daredevil defeats the goldfish-bowl-wearing bad guy and -- instead of granting the villain a proper dispatching -- verbally abuses him to the point that Mysterio, in an homage to Kraven, pulls out a gun and commits suicide.

Of course, it looks as if that, too, was a faked death. Because he's back and better than ever as the force behind the resurgence of the once-faltering Maggia crime family.

Mysterio makes his comeback at 5 on the VQ scale -- a nice in-the-middle number for someone who has crossed the line between life and death so often.

Hell, let's face it, we're not responsible for anything; including the things we say, do, or think. And if you sue us because you think we are? Well, we're not responsible for that either.
